Healthy Mexican Food

Happy Cinco de Mayo! If you’re like me, you’ll be celebrating with some delicious Mexican food. Whether you are cooking at home next week or getting take-out from one of our local Mexican restaurants, I wanted to share some ways to ensure you are nourishing your body while enjoying your meal.

Here are 5 “do’s & don’ts” to keep in mind while preparing for your Cinco de Mayo:

🚫 DON’T

Order extra queso... yes we all love to get it with chips and pour it over our Arroz con Pollo, however just 2 T is 100 calories! Things can quickly get out of hand with ratios like that.

✅ DO

Enjoy salsa, guacamole or fresh pico de gallo. Grab a plate and serve yourself a portion of chips and one of these options. Make a choice to savor and enjoy your portion and then move on to the rest of your meal.

🚫 DON’T

Order fried entrees. Chile rellenos, chalupas, chimichangas, gorditas, tostadas, and taquitos all equal FRIED food. Also, avoid that deep-fried shell that is served with a taco salad.

✅ DO

Enjoy un-fried entrees such as enchiladas, burritos, tamales, soft-shelled tacos. Choose corn tortillas over flour, when available. Grilled fajitas are also a great option!

🚫 DON’T

Order “ground and mashed”.

✅ DO

Keep it “whole” - opt for steak and whole black beans when available instead of ground beef and refried beans.

🚫 DON’T

Order extra toppings on your meal. Extra cheese, sour cream & guacamole can add up calories quickly.

✅ DO

Request toppings on the side to control portions or substitute pico de gallo for cheese or sour cream.

🚫 DON’T

Get your margarita frozen.

✅ DO

Opt for it “on the rocks” if you plan to enjoy a margarita or mixed drink.

Mexican food has many options to stay on track and #eattonourish. A little planning can go a long way to ensure you don’t regret your choices on the 6th of May.
